INTRODUCTION TO WAQF |
THE MEANING OF WAQF: In the language context, waqf means to stop, contain, or preserve. In the Islamic law (syarak) term, waqf means holding certain usable property and preserving its physical condition by donating the property for the benefit of society (ummah). HISTORY OF WAQF : Rasulullah S.A.W has set the best example of waqf practice in Islam. The first waqf in Islam is the construction of Quba' Mosque, followed by An-Nabawi Mosque. It was narrated that Rasulullah S.A.W purchased the land from two orphans named Sahal and Suhail at the price of 100 dirhams, then donated the land for the mosque construction. This waqf practice was followed by the companions of Rasulullah S.A.W. For example, Saidina Umar R.A. gave his land in Khaibar as waqf to the public. This clearly shows that the companions always follow Rasulullah's good deeds in order to get Allah S.W.T's love and blessings. Nowadays, we can see how waqf properties can uplift the economy and enhance the eminence of Islam. For instance, Al-Azhar University in Egypt that was established based on the concept of waqf has produced hundred thousands number of students. The same goes to the success of waqf hospitals, clinics, and institutions that have been funded entirely from the Muslims' waqf properties in the Islamic countries TYPES OF WAQF :
